A Diet Change for Climate Change

Upon reading the prompt for this project, the first cause that came to mind was climate change.

Climate change is one of those issues that, at first glance, seems so inconceivably large to where you don't know where to start. After all, there are so many components of climate change: greenhouse gases, global warming, natural disasters etc. Among these factors, you will also find a plethora of legislative approaches to mitigate climate change, infinite viewpoints on its causes and effects on the Earth, and in the dumpster fire that is the current US political system, even debates on the plausibility of its mere existence.

Unsurprisingly, in light of these conflicting viewpoints, I feel that what we are taught about climate change has drastically evolved even very recently. For this reason, I believe that in addition to just naming actions we can individually take against climate change, being educated on this complex issue is so important. With this being said, there are certainly measures that you and I can take daily to actually make a difference.

One Small Thing(s): My first OST is to alleviate the impact of climate change by urging you to reduce your meat intake. On some level, I think that telling people to go vegetarian or vegan can be unrealistic and honestly, tone deaf. However, the animal product industry contributes immensely to climate change; producing "more greenhouse gas emissions than all cars, planes, trains and ships combined," With global demand for meat increasing, I encourage you to reduce your meat intake this week, even just by a little.

My second OST is to spread awareness about climate change, which I will detail in a second blog post

  1. You are right! I have always cared for the environment and wildlife and have thought about going vegetarian, but it has always seemed too hard that I barely even try. Additionally my parents cook meat very often for meals and I don't know how to cook very much. It is nice that you point out the realistic situation where it is very hard to go vegetarian for many people, and instead encourage something more realistic like reducing the consumption of meat.
